This US Printing Press: Handmaking Books from Start to Finish
At the Arion Press, located in the US, books are made by hand from beginning to end. Each letter of a book is meticulously created one by one, resulting in a book that can take years to produce and cost up to ten thousand dollars to purchase.
The Foundry
It all starts in the foundry, where Brian Farrett operates a monotype machine from the 1890s. Using this machine, he creates individual letters by melting a lead, tin, and antimony solution. The molten lead is then poured into a mold.
The Print Room
Once the type is finished, it is sent down the hall to the print room. Here, Jeff Raymond meticulously arranges the type into a page layout, letter by letter. To keep the page intact, Jeff wraps it in string. The page is then checked for any mistakes on the poofing press. Once the proof looks good, it is ready for the final print run on one of the larger presses.
The Bindery
The final stage of the bookmaking process takes place in the bindery. Megan Gibbous carefully folds, sews, and glues each piece of the book together by hand. The result is not just a book, but a true work of art.
